Choyo Maru

The Choyo Maru was an early sail steam corvette. It was the first ship in the Imperial Japanese Navy, and served as a training vessel. During the Boshin War, she was sent north to practice. Her sister ships included the Meiyo and the Tokuyo Maru. She was constructed at the C. Gips & Sons shipyard in Dordrecht.

In May 1858, she arrived at Nagasaki. She later renamed the Choyo Maru. Later, she was transferred to the Nagasaki Naval Training Center.

When Japan was defeated in the Boshin War, the Choyo Maru was taken over by the Meiji government. She served as a training vessel in the Nagasaki Naval Training Center. As she was sailing in Hakodate Bay, she came under fire from the Republic of Ezo paddle schooner Banryu. Despite her efforts, the Banryu penetrated the gunpowder magazine of the Maru.

Denryu Maru

The Denryu Maru was a well executed if not overly complex naval vessel of the early 19th century. A fleet of six or seven was stationed in Nagasaki and a small cadre in Kobe. Several of these were relegated to duty in the more northern provinces of Hokkaido and Kyushu. The aforementioned trio were dubbed into the fray in 1868 to varying degrees of success. During the nascent war a few straggling vessels, such as the flagship of the triumpphalum, were the prize, while the remainder were scrapped by both sides. Interestingly, this was not a battle that was to be fought over the following decade.
